Deze lijst bevat termen, afkortingen, acronymen en jargon uit de informatica met daarbij een korte omschrijving en/of de bron van de term. Gebruik het om uw kennis van informatica te vergroten. Deze lijst is nooit compleet, maar we doen wel ons best het zo compleet mogelijk te krijgen. Uw opmerkingen en/of aanvullingen zijn welkom.

  • B-Frame = techniek bij digitale video, die zowel de veranderingen ten opzichte van het vorige frame als het volgende frame beschrijft; zie PCM jan 04; zie ook i-frame, p-frame
  • B-kanaal = bearer channel, bij ISDN, kanaal voor het verzenden van data, 64 kbps, full duplex; zie ook ISDN
  • B-Spline = filtertechniek voor verkleinen van afbeeldingen; geeft vage afbeeldingen; zie ook Lanczos
  • B3D = Bodypaint 3D, extensie
  • B8ZS = Binary 8-Zero Substitution; line-code type, used on T1 and E1 circuits, in which a special code is substituted whenever 8 consecutive zeros are sent over the link, this technique guarantees ones density independent of the data stream; sometimes called bipolar 8-zero substitution; zie http://www.cisco.com; zie ook AMI
  • Back end = server bij client-server-techniek; zie ook front, end
  • Backbone = slagader van een netwerk
  • Backingstore = X-server onthoudt vensterinhoud als venster wordt geminimaliseerd; zie PC+ nov 92
  • Backoff = retransmission delay enforced by contentious MAC protocols after a network node with data to transmit determines that the physical medium is already in use; zie http://www.cisco.com
  • Backplane = physical connection between an interface processor or card and the data buses and the power distribution buses inside a chassis; zie http://www.cisco.com
  • Backplane link = doorlusvoorziening op switch (naar volgende switch); zie PCM nov 03
  • BACP = Bandwidth Allocation Control Protocol; hierbij gebruikt een modem meer lijnen wanneer dat nodig is of minder wanneer er weinig dataverkeer is; zie http://www.zyxel.com
  • Balanced configuration = in HDLC, a point-to-point network configuration with two combined stations ; zie http://www.cisco.com; zie ook HDLC
  • Balun = balanced, unbalanced; device used for matching impedance between a balanced and an unbalanced line, usually twisted-pair and coaxial cable ; zie http://www.cisco.com
  • Bandbreedte = verschil tussen de hoogste en laaste frequenties die beschikbaar is voor een signaal; o.a. bepalend voor de doorvoersnelheid van een netwerk
  • Bank = de bij elkaar horende geheugenmodules in eencomputer; zie http://www.newerram.com
  • BAP = Best Access Point; techniek bij WiFi om sterkste zender te vinden
  • Baseband = most common type of network, data is transmitted digitally, each wire carrying one signal at a time, b.v. ethernet; zie PC Advisor jun 00; zie ook broadband
  • Bash = Bourne-again shell; interactive UNIX shell based on the traditional Bourne shell, but with increased functionality; zie http://www.cisco.com
  • BASIC = Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code, programmeertaal
  • Baud = communicatiesnelheid in bits per seconde
  • Bayasian logic = logica die uitgaat van de statische waarschijnlijkheid, vereist beginwaarde; zie DDJ jul 93; zie ook Fuzzy, logic
  • BBS = Bulletin Board System, inbel-computer voor het downloaden van software en uitwisselen van berichten, uit het pre-internettijdperk
  • BBU = Bob Bailey Unit, schakeling van Apple voor RAM, video en sound
  • BCV = Business Continuance Volume, feature van SAN; zie windows2000 magazine, jan 01; zie ook SAN

  • BD+ = DRM bij BD-ROM; zie http://www.wikipedia.org/
  • BD ROM, BD-ROM, BDROM = Blu-ray Disk Read Only Memory; beschrijfbare dvd met capaciteit 25 GB (50 GB dual-layer); schijf is dikker dan huidige DVD; zie PCWorld nov 04; zie ook Blu-ray, HD-DVD
  • BD-R = Blu-ray Disk Rewritebale; zie PCM aug 06; zie ook Blu-ray
  • BDC = Backup Domain Controller; zie PCM okt 99; zie ook PDC
  • BDCS = Broadband Digital Cross-Connect System, SONET DCS capable of cross-connecting DS-3, STS-1 and STS-3c signals; zie http://www.cisco.com; zie ook DCS
  • BDF = Bitmap Distribution Format, formaat voor bitmap-representatie van fonts; zie http://www.adobe.com
  • BDK = JavaBeans Development Kit , ontwikkelomgeving voor JavaBeans components ; zie http://www.j2ee.com/
  • BDP = Borland Data Provider, verbinding tussen datacomponenten en database bij ADO.NET; zie http://bdn.borland.com/
  • BDS = Borland Developer Studio; ontwikkelomgeving; zie http://www.borland.com
  • Beacon Interval = the frequency interval of the beacon, which is a packet broadcast by a router to synchronize a wireless network.; zie http://www.linksys.com
  • BeamFlex = techniek voor draadloos netwerk, maakt gebruik van meer antennes; zie PCM sep 05; zie ook 802.11n
  • BECN = Backward Explicit Congestion Notification, bit set by a Frame Relay network in frames traveling in the opposite direction of frames encountering a congested path; zie http://www.cisco.com
  • Behavior = uitbreiding op HTML-tags, COM-based, werkt met CSS-syntax; zie MSDN mei 00; zie ook HTC, Scriptlet
  • Bell = filtertechniek voor verkleinen van afbeeldingen; gemiddelde snelheid, goed bij grote foto's, kleinere worden te vaag; zie ook B-Spline
  • Bento = intelligente bestandsvorm; werkt met SOM; zie PCM sep 94
  • BeOs = besturingssysteem van Be, zeer geschikt voor DTP en multimedia; zie http://www.beos.com
  • BER = Bit Error Rate; ratio of received bits that contain errors; zie http://www.cisco.com
  • BER = Basic Encoding Rules; rules for encoding data units described in the ISO ASN.1 standard; zie http://www.cisco.com; zie ook ASN, 1
  • Beta = objectgeoriënteerde programmeertaal; gaat uit van patterns; zie DDJ okt 93
  • BFILE = reference in a dbms to an external file; zie http://www.borland.com
  • BGA = Ball Grid Array, type aansluiting chip; zie http://www.intel.com/
  • BGP = Border Gateway Protocol, interdomain routing protocol that replaces EGP; BGP exchanges reachability information with other BGP systems, defined by RFC 1163; zie http://www.cisco.com; zie ook BGP4, and, EGP
  • BGP4 = BGP Version 4, version 4 of the predominant interdomain routing protocol used on the Internet, supports CIDR and uses route aggregation mechanisms to reduce the size of routing tables; zie http://www.cisco.com; http://www.ietf.org; zie ook BGP, CIDR
  • BHO = Browser Helper Object, plugin voor internetbrowser voor extra functionaliteit; zie pcm nov 03, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/delphi-webbrowser/
  • Bi-linear filtering = smoothes the textures in a picture to reduce the blocky effect; tri-lineair filtering is a better system but takes more processor power; zie PC Plus okt 99
  • BIA = Burned In MAC address; zie http://www.cisco.com
  • BIC-TCP = Binary Increase Congestion Transmission Control Protocol; voorstel voor netwerkprotocol waarbij bandbreedte razendsnel dynamisch wordt gebruikt; zie DDJ jun 04
  • BICI = Broadband Inter-Carrier Interface; ITU-T standard that defines the protocols and procedures needed for establishing, maintaining, and terminating broadband switched virtual connections between public networks; zie http://www.cisco.com
  • BIOS = Basic Input Output System; primaire systeemfuncties van een computer voor o.a. schijftoegang, toetsenbord en beeldscherm
  • BIP = Bit Interleaved Parity, in ATM, a method used to monitor errors on a link; zie http://www.cisco.com
  • BISDN = Broadband ISDN, ITU-T communication standards designed to handle high-bandwidth applications such as video, BISDN currently uses ATM technology over SONET-based transmission circuits to provide data rates from 155 to 622 Mbps and beyond, contrast with N-ISDN; zie http://www.cisco.com; zie ook BRI, ISDN, PRI
  • BIST = Built-In Self-Test, functie in hardware of software om zichzelf te testen op juiste werking; zie DDJ maa 93
  • Bisync = Binary Synchronous Communication Protocol, character-oriented data-link protocol for applications; zie http://www.cisco.com
  • Bit = binairy digit, kleinste data-element in de infomatica, kan de waarde 0 of 1 hebben
  • Bitmap = afbeelding, waarbij elk bit overeenkomt met een pixel op scherm/printer
  • Bitnet = Because It's Time Network, netwerk voor chatten, sinds 1980; zie PCM jul 87
  • BITS = Background Intelligent Transfer Service, module van XP die updates download als er weinig netwerkverkeer is; zie PCM sep 04
  • BIU = Bus Interface Unit, schakeling van Apple voor verbinding NuBus met de processor
  • Blade PC, Blade system = PC op een insteekkaart, bedoeld voor in een rack met meer blade pc's; concept waarbij de processor in de serverruimte staat en deze is verbonden met thin clients op de bureau's (elke client heeft dus z'n eigen processor, i.p.v. processortijd op een server); zie Pc Pro jan 05
  • BLAST = Bell Labs Layered Space Time, techniek om data op verschillende frekwenties tegelijk te zenden; zie Pc Pro jan 03
  • BLER = Bit Level Error Rate, aantal fouten op een cd (N.B: op internet ook Block Level Error Rate); zie PCM apr 02
  • BLOB = Binary Large Object, databaseveld geschikt voor grote hoeveelheden tekst of data, zoals word-documenten, afbeeldingen, WAV-bestanden, etc.
  • Blockdown converter = microgolf-omzetter, vertaalt een frequentiegebied naar een ander frequentiegebied; zie PC Magazine dec 03
  • Blocking = in a switching system, a condition in which no paths are available to complete a circuit; zie http://www.cisco.com
  • blog = synoniem voor Weblog; zie ook Weblog
  • Blowfish = block-encryptie algoritme, systeem voor beveiliging van gegevens; zie DDJ apr 94
  • BLSR = Bidirectional Line Switch Ring, SONET ring architecture that provides working and protection fibers between nodes, if the working fiber between nodes is cut, traffic is automatically routed onto the protection fiber; zie http://www.cisco.com; zie ook SONET
  • Blu-ray Disc = DVD-standaard bedoeld voor digitale televisie, werkt met blauwe laser, opslagcapaciteit 23 GB; niet compatible met andere DVD-standaards; zie PCM apr 02
  • Bluecore = chip die Bluetooth implementeert; zie PCWorld nov 04
  • Bluetooth = wireless personal area network standard, kan interfereren met IEEE 802.11; kleiner bereik dan 802.11 maar verbruikt veel minder stroom; Klasse 1 = 100 mW (100 m), Klasse 2 = 2,5 mW (20 m), Klasse 3 = 1 mW (10 m); zie MSJ mar 00, PC pro dec 01; zie ook A2DP, AVRCP
  • Bluetooth EDR = Bluetooth met snelheid van 2,1 Mbit; geschikt voor draadloze hifi stereo koptelefoons; zie PCWorld nov 04
  • BMP = Windows bitmap-bestandsformaat; zie PCM nov 95
  • BMP = Basic Multilingual Plane; subset van UCS met de 65534 meest gebruikte tekens; zie ook UCS
  • BMT = Biel Mean Time, standaard voor tijdrekening van IBT; zie MacFan aug 99; zie ook www.swatch.com
  • BNC = Bayonet Neill Concellman, connector voor coax-kabel; zie C|net glossary
  • BNF = Backus-Naur Form, standaard voor het beschrijven van internet text messages; zie http://rfc733.x42.com/
  • BNI = Broadband Network Interface
  • BNN = Boundary Network Node, in SNA terminology, a subarea node that provides boundary function support for adjacent peripheral nodes, this support includes sequencing, pacing, and address translation; also called boundary node; zie http://www.cisco.com
  • BO2K = Back Oriface 2000, zeer gevaarlijk virus
  • BOD = Bandwidth On Demand, techniek bij ISDN om automatisch 2e kanaal ook te gebruiken als op het 1e kanaal de volledige bandbreedte wordt gebruikt; zie MacFan jul 00; zie ook MultiPPP, DOD
  • BOF = Begin-of-File; zie ook EOF
  • BOM = Byte Order Mark, geeft aan of 16-bits data bestaat uit high byte-low byte of uit low byte-high byte; wordt gebruikt bij unicode; zie MSDN mei 00
  • Booleaanse Algebra = rekenmethode met AND, OR en NOT
  • Boolean = programmavariabele die de waarde true of false kan hebben
  • Bootp = Bootstrap Protocol, protocol om automatisch met een netwerk verbinding te krijgen
  • Bos = besturingssysteem
  • Bots = AI-scripts die menselijk handelen simuleren, b.v. als tegenstander in games; zie PC Format aug 00
  • BPDU = Bridge Protocol Data Unit, spanning-tree protocol hello packet that is sent out at configurable intervals to exchange information among bridges in the network ; zie http://www.cisco.com; zie ook PDU
  • bps = bits per seconds; in de praktijk: deel het getal door 10 en je hebt de snelheid in bytes (tekens) per seconde
  • Branch prediction = techniek die voorspelt welke richting een programma zal uitgaan; zie PCM nov 00
  • BRAS = Broadband Remote Access Server; zie http://www.adsl.nl
  • BREW = Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless, wireless platform for developing applications that support wireless devices. ; zie http://www.qualcomm.com/
  • BRF = Bridge Relay Function
  • BRI = Basic Rate Interface, twee ISDN kanalen gecombineerd tot 128 kbps; zie C|net glossary
  • Bridge = device that connects and passes packets between two network segments that use the same communications protocol, bridges operate at the data link layer (Layer 2) of the OSI reference model; zie ook Relay
  • Bridge = generic term for an analogue-digital converter (and back), and derives its term from one of the first units, the FAST Dazzle Hollywood Bridge; zie http://www.simplydv.co.uk
  • Broadband = describes analog transmissions over a wire that can carry multiple signals at once; zie PC Advisor jun 00
  • Brouter = concatenation of "bridge" and "router", used to refer to devices which perform both bridging and routing function; zie http://www.cisco.com
  • Browser (webbrowser, www-browser, internetbrowser) = programma om te surfen over WWW, b.v. Internet Explorer, Navigator, Mosaic, iCab, Opera
  • BSD = Berkely Standard Distribution, Unix-variant; zie ook Unix

  • BSS = Business Support System; zie http://www.j2ee.com/
  • BTB = Branche Target Buffer, unit in Pentium 4, geeft richting aan de instructiestroom door te voorspellen welke vertakking binnen een programma gevolgd moet worden; zie PCM nov 00
  • Btrieve = Opslagformaat voor records, waarbij de records gesorteerd worden opgeslagen in een boomstructuur; zie DDJ maa 93
  • BTX = Balanced Technology eXtended; moederbord van Intel waarbij de luchtstroom zo is dat eerst de processor wordt gekoeld en daarna andere componenten; AGP en PCI zijn vervangen door PCI-Express; vereist CTX-voeding; zie PCM jun 04; zie ook ATX
  • Bump mapping = technique for apply 3D textures to flat surfaces, so rocks look like rocks; zie PC Plus okt 99, methode om oppervlakten een natuurlijk ogende structuur te geven, zie PCM feb 00
  • BURN-proof = Buffer UnderRuN-proof, technologie bij CDR/CDRW die de drive automatisch even pauzeert bij onvoldoende datatoevoer; zie windows2000 magazine, jan 01

  • BX Chipset = chipset van Intel voor het BX Motherboard; zie http://www.intel.com
  • BXM = Broadband Switch Module
  • Byte = 8 bits, data wordt doorgaans in bytes verwerkt, 256 waarden
